BAFTX 3rd Annual Awards Dinner - May 2009

It is that time of the year again !

BAFTX has completed our 2010 scholarship program, it was yet again another successful year.

As we continue to grow and our applications increase, the choice of candidates are as ever, very worthy, but after some difficult choices over $90,000 has been awarded between 23 scholarships in 2010.

We were delighted to have attending the dinner this year, many of the BABC 2009 GALA table sponsors presenting the awards to their scholarship recipients.  This for BAFTX is a major step forward to our goal of merging our scholarship winners with the business community, who can help them continue to move forward with their potential and to maybe ease the burden of their finances.

The evening began with a reception where all of our presenters had the opportunity to meet their scholarship recipients for a chat and quick update, which, definitely made the evening more memorable for our students.

The scholarships awarded for 2010 included, Tram Hayhen Hoang-Nguyen, who was awarded the Houston Grampian Association Early Starter Award for 2010 by Mary Metz MBE, Houston Grampian Chairperson.  Tram is a student attending Cornerstone Academy,

The four lucky students who are going to the UK for a two week study program are  Monica Bowling from Lee High School, Award presented by Sally Stiles of British Airways.  Lizette Coronado from KIPP Houston High School, Award presented by Bryan Bulawa from Enterprise Products Partners.  Jacqueline Khong, KIPP Houston High School, Awarded by John Lee from the Wood Group and Steve Baker from Spectra Energy awarded Claudia Miranda from Spring Woods Senior High School the final Jr Achiever Award.

We awarded a number of Undergraduate scholarships for 2010.  They include five to the University of Houston, five to the Houston Community College and six to Texas A&M.  These students were presented from many prominent oil industry companies with offices both in the USA and UK.  They include Energy XXI, ConocoPhillips, Dynamic Offshore, Exxon Mobil and Hess.

Our Alumni testimonial came from Armel Gifford.  Armel was a recipient of a BAFTX Scholarship in 2008 and attended the Inaugural BAFTX Awards Dinner.  Armel is now studying Medicine at Baylor University and wish her every success.

Our new contract for 2010 is with Texas A&M and we are excited to be working with both the Scholarship Office and the Study Abroad Office.  This year we had three from each.  Including the RBS The Royal Bank of Scotland 'Reciprocal' Award was presented by Kevin Howard to Alissa Shelton who will attend the University of Bristol.

We were especially delighted to award Yellowstone Academy our Kids with Courage Pledge for 2010.  Yellowstone Academy is a  private, non-profit, Christian School serving children living in extreme poverty in Houston's Third Ward.  The aim of the school is to equip the students with the academic, social, and spiritual foundations necessary to become persons of character, achievement, and responsibility, which is also our mission.

After an onsite visit by Susan Howard and Carole Serjeant, the case was made for the need funding to test 25 students academically and psychologically. Sixteen of the students will be tested academically and nine of the students will be tested academically and psychologically. This is absolutely critical to the success of these students. Our pledge will go some way to help this need met.
